After The Latest Peril-In-The-Skies Saga, Should You Be Afraid To Fly?

Recently I got my one-zillionth email of the day from a friend or reader asking: What with this, and the Malaysian flight, I'm getting worried. Is something going wrong with our air-safety system?

I am more afraid of catching a virus from another passenger than the actual idea of hurling through the air in a metal tube at high speeds without a parachute.

I have always been terrified of flying. It just is not my thing.

You have a better chance of getting hit by lightning than being in a crash.

I realize that but my brain cannot compute. I think the fact that I cannot get off the plane if I wanted is my problem. I don't like being confined.

Its by far the safest mode of transportation on earth..I deal in odds, and if you look at the odds you have a greater chance of being killed just about anywhere else on earth. I worked at 3 major airports for 30 years and have watched airplanes come and go, one right after another, 30 seconds apart all day and all night, it seems like millions.....and not one of those i've witnessed has crashed. So I have no fear whatsoever...

And BTW- Getting hit by lightening is a terrible comparision because in the summer afternoons up here you have "a relitively" good chance of getting hit..

I agree but I still don't like being on a plane. I know it is very safe.

My super model daughter flys international a lot and she hates it, so she gets a first class pod and gets to the airport early so she can get drunk in the bar before the flight- As far as I know she's never been denied boarding yet-

You are 100% safe flying unless its like Malaysia airlines or from questionable countries. Accidents happen because of foul play and human error. Very few airline crashes happen because of mechanical failure.
